My name is Patrick Maguire, I am the National Vice Commandant for the New England Division, Marine Corps League. Thank you for showing interest by visiting the website for the Division.
My father was a Marine serving from 1957-1959 as a military policeman. He would tell us from time to time some stories about his duty stations and some of his experiences while serving. Being the youngest of six children, I didn’t have any interest in joining the Marine Corps until I was 10 years old. That was when my second oldest brother graduated from Parris Island. I sat there in awe, saying to myself that I will be marching across one day to become a Marine. Little did I know that I would be to Parris Island four more times to see my other brothers graduate and finally I crossed Peatross parade deck graduating to become a Marine.
I served from 1989-1993 as a 3533, logistics vehicle operator. I was with 8th Motor Transport Battalion when I went to the Persian Gulf during Desert Storm. My tour was shortened due to a motor vehicle accident where injuries forced me back to the states.
Shortly thereafter, I got married to my wife Lynn, we lived out the back gate at Camp Lejeune until I got orders to Okinawa, Japan. Upon reporting into 9th MTBN the S-1 chief, I learned that SSgt Corry, was from Providence, RI. He took me under his wing and allowed me to stay on base rather than a 6-month med float.
A month later, Lynn flew to Okinawa, and we experienced Okinawa together. It’s a time that we both will treasure for our lifetime.
In 1997 our daughter, Jessica was born. Being a dad there wasn’t a lot of time to do anything else. She was very active in sports, and I was there either coaching or helping coach. One day we took her to a parade in town and I saw a Marine Corps League color guard. I was impressed but didn’t pursue getting much information. One day in 2014, I ran into one of those color guard members in a restaurant, we spoke for a little and she handed me an application and told me to come to the next meeting.
I did attend and by the second meeting I was asked to be the Detachment Chaplain. I became the Detachment JA, Sr. Vice Commandant and the Detachment Commandant. I was elected to the Department of Rhode Island Sr. Vice Commandant and was privileged to hold the position of Rhode Island Department Commandant position for several terms.
In 2021, NVC Dave Porter asked me to be his assistant. I was extremely honored and performed those duties until 2023 when I was sworn in as Vice Commandant. I received and continue to receive guidance over the years from many members and I am thankful for everyone who has assisted and supported me since joining the League.
Looking back, I have met some amazing people and even more amazing Marine brothers and sisters. The events and functions that help local Marines, Veterans and their families has been personally satisfying. Making a difference in a Veterans life makes me proud to be a part of the Marine Corps League.
Becoming a member of the league introduced me to the Young Marines program. I am an adult volunteer which has been very rewarding working with our future leaders.
